Audubon Animals Information

Audubon began his last great work with an ambitious idea. He wanted to publish a work containing all the mammals of America called Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America. It was to prove to be a daunting task and required a tremendous amount of effort on his part, as well as his sons. He enlisted the aid of Rev. Bachmann of Charleston, SC to help him in this work. He first published an Imperial Folio edition in 1845-1848. Soon after, he once again decided to reach the masses with a smaller Royal Octavo version called simply " The Quadrupeds of North America ". The first edition was issued between 1948-1854. Subsequent layer editions continued until from 1854 to about 1870.

Offered here are lithographs from both the first and second edition. The editions are basically identical and little difference can be seen between them, unlike the more easily noticable differences between the first and later editions octavo birds with their white versus colored backgrounds. We have many more of the octavo animals which we will be listing in the near future. Please contact us if there is a particular animal you are interested in acquiring or to receive our current list. Check back with us as we are constantly adding to our revolving inventory.
